By the time you are truly using that third the game has a winner already (and in PvP if you have been settling in bad tiles for the sake of distance it likely isn't you).Ī few quick basic answers. To sum it up I try my best to get 4 tiles between my cities, but I settle my fair share of 3 tiles apart and a few 5 or 6 ones sometimes, settling in a great inner circle position or at the very least an awessome middle circle is way more important than settling without overlap on one or two sides of the third one. The very first inner circle is the most important one because for a very long time your city will be limited to then, the better they are the sooner that city snowballs into usefullness and high production, if you settle in a not so good inner circle so that your city is far away from the others and have a very nice outer circle, by the time that city starts actually using the majority of the outer one the game will be over, don't underestimate how quickly a game can end and how brutally long it takes for a city to star making full use of all 3 rings, specially if the inner one was bad and slowed it's growth. I believe the perfect number is 4 tiles between the cities, 3 tiles is the maximum proximity and will cause a lot of overlaping, 6 tiles is so far that a lot of land will be wasted and also may require you to settle in a less than optimal inner circle. There's a lot of personal preference and room for discussion on this last topic so don't blindly trust any suggestion as the totally right one, including mine. I mean I pick what I need first, but I never skip anything totally (same with civics).
